WPBS Whiz Quiz Production Postponed Until Spring 2021

The 2020/21 school year is now underway – and it is a year like no other. In these uncertain times, the team at WPBS continues to work to safely support learners for all ages with resources and materials, quality educational programming, and virtual events designed to make remote/at-home learning engaging and rewarding.

In normal times one of the highlights of the year at WPBS is the production of Whiz Quiz, the high school quiz competition series that has, for 40 years, celebrated academic excellence in our region. Every October, teams of 4 students from each participating high school face off in the WPBS studio as matches are recorded for broadcast. However with the onset of the pandemic, WPBS Education Services staff realized it might not be possible to assure the safety of all involved. After so, after consulting with the Community Education Council, Whiz Quiz judges, and school advisors, we have decided to postpone the upcoming Whiz Quiz season until Spring 2021.

In lieu of our regular Whiz Quiz programming this Fall, WPBS is offering a Whiz Quiz Trivia Challenge, sponsored by Fidelis Care, to our would-be Whiz Quiz competitors! The WQ Trivia Challenge is a completely virtual event that features trivia in a 20-minute, mission-based platform. Students must complete missions in trivia, STEM, and math for points to determine the Trivia Champ. The Trivia Challenge is being offered to 9th – 12th grade students with any interest in participating in Whiz Quiz. Students must compete in teams of 3 and must have an advisor in order to participate.

Throughout the school year and beyond, WPBS will continue to provide educational programming and initiatives to inspire, educate, and connect students to their community and their world.
