WPBS-TV Presents Free Screening of “Folk Art Expressions of St. Lawrence County” at TAUNY Canton, January 18, 2024

WATERTOWN, NY (January 8, 2024) – WPBS-TV and Traditional Arts of Upstate New York (TAUNY) will be co-hosting a free screening of five WPBS short films  highlighting North Country Folk Artists, as listed below. These will also air on the station’s flagship current affairs series, WPBS Weekly: Inside the Stories, Tuesday nights at 7:30 pm, and will be available for on-demand viewing anytime on the WPBS video player (watch.wpbstv.org) and mobile app.

The screening and reception will be held at TAUNY, 53 Main Street, Canton, NY on Thursday January 18th, from 6:30 – 8:30 pm. Light hors d’oeuvres will be served and musical entertainment will be provided. The artists featured in this series will be in attendance. The public is encouraged to attend, meet the artists, and find inspiration for their own creativity.

This collection of stories featuring local folk artists was generously supported by the Dr. D. SHORT FILM DESCRIPTIONS

Roxanne Locy:  Pottery (aired January 2, 2024)

Roxanne Locy is a retired art treacher who spends most of her days in her colorful studio, throwing and sculpting earthenware masterpieces.  Her work is featured at TAUNY in St. Lawrence County.

Ruth Varley: Jewelry Making (to air January 16, 2024)

Ruth Varley is an artisan jeweler, specializing in river glass pieces.  From earrings to rings, she carefully seeks out, on her local beach, colorful pieces of river glass to shine and shape for her jewelry.

Mathilde Lind: Weaving (to air February 6, 2024)

Mathilde Lind is the Director of Prgrams and Research at TAUNY, as well as a well-traveled fiber artist and expert, with a specialty in spinning and weaving.

Sarah Platt: Barn Quilts (to air February 20, 2024)

Barn quilts originated in Europe.  Today we find them all over the North Country.  Sarah Platt has fallen in love with the concept and teaches a barn quilting art class at Hermon-Dekalb.

Matt Rozler: Woodworking (to air March 12, 2024)

Matt Rozler is a retired New York State police investigator, fully dedicated to his craft of designing masterful pieces that are fully functional.
