WPBS-TV AND WATERTOWN DAILY TIMES COLLABORATE IN NEW ‘MORE TO THE STORY’

Watertown, NY – WPBS-TV and the Watertown Daily Times present More to the Story: ESPRI, airing on WPBS-TV on Sunday, June 23 at 6:30pm, rebroadcasting on Saturday, June 29 at 6:30pm, and streaming online at watch.wpbstv.org. Watertown Daily Times journalists Olivia Belanger and Craig Fox, along with WPBS-TV Producer and Executive Director of Production, Tracy DuFlo, speak to officials and business people in Jefferson County to learn more about the root of the poverty issue. The article will run in the Watertown Daily Times on Sunday, June 23 and online at NNY360.com.

Almost 22 percent of people in the Watertown area live in poverty, well above the state average. Community members have struggled for years to fight against poverty with limited progress and resources until now. In 2018, the city of Watertown received a $1 million grant through the Empire State Poverty Reduction Initiative, or ESPRI program, to help combat poverty in the city. This campaign is the first of its kind to help local anti-poverty initiatives get a solid start. This edition of More to the Story takes a look at some of the initiatives and programs that the city of Watertown has undertaken to help combat poverty, how the money has been spent, and the results.
