Hannah Sohn | 2017 ONNY Young Artist Competition Winner | Beyond the Competition

Beyond the Competition – Showcasing Former Winners of The Orchestra of Northern New York’s Young Artist Competition.

Junior High and High School students from Northern and Central New York are invited to participate in the 15th Annual Young Artist Competition on Saturday, February 20, 2021. Participants will receive feedback from a panel of professional musicians that includes ONNY’s music director.

Cash prizes will be awarded and the winner will have the opportunity to solo with ONNY at a future concert.

HANNAH JIEUN SOHN has been playing the cello since the age of 6. She has studied under cellists Monique Heidema, at the Sweelinck Academie of the Conservatorium van Amsterdam, and Dr. David Bebe of the College of Saint Rose. She has also been coached by Yumi Kendall and Gloria dePasquale of the Philadelphia Orchestra. She participated in masterclasses conducted by cellists Johannes Moser, Paul Dwyer, and Steven Isserlis. From 2010 to 2017, Ms. Sohn was principal cellist of the Empire State Youth Orchestra, performing in numerous concert halls, including the world-renowned Troy Savings Bank Music Hall. She made her solo debut with the Orchestra of Northern New York when she was just 15. In the Netherlands, Ms. Sohn had the opportunity to participate in chamber performances with fellow students of the Young Talent Class at the Sweelinck Academie, as well as with the GoYa Quartet of the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra. She has earned numerous awards in competitions, including First Prize of the 2019 Britten Concours, resulting in a solo performance with the Britten Jeugd Strijkorkest. Now in her sophomore year at the Mannes School of Music, she studies under the tutelage of cellist, Yehuda Hanani. With great passion and enthusiasm for music, Ms. Sohn hopes to pursue a career as a professional musician.
