Celebrating STEM Accomplishments and Career Opportunities for Women and Girls

February 11th marks the United Nations’ International Day of Women & Girls in Science, and WPBS is proud to celebrate and promote career opportunities in STEM fields through our career planning platform, GPS for Success (mygpsforsuccess.com). STEM refers to the disciplines of Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math and involves many professions including Environmentalists, Software Developers, and Engineers.

Many of the women active in STEM fields have gone unrecognized despite their achievements,  preventing young women from having access to role models who look like them. WPBS is keen to encourage young women to consider careers in these fields and will soon be adding the video series “Women in STEM” to the GPS for Success platform. This series was produced by PBS sister-station WSKG in Binghamton, NY and shares the personal stories of many high-achieving women in different STEM professions.

Additionally, WPBS recently produced a series of videos at the Showstoppers exhibition in New York City, focusing on the application of STEM knowledge in the creation of Broadway costuming. This collection highlights the burgeoning field of “STEAM,” that is, the integration of STEM knowledge and expertise in the Arts. The series celebrates the artists and craftsmen behind the scenes who create incredible costumes and accessories using chemistry, 3D printing, electronic circuits, and more. The videos and supporting curriculum materials will soon be made available on mygpsforsuccess.com and will also be distributed to educators nationally through the PBS Learning Media platform.

Education informs and enriches everything we do at WPBS, and we strive to inspire those we serve to fulfill their potential as lifelong learners. On this important international day, we are excited to do our part to raise awareness of the achievements and opportunities for women and girls in science fields.
