Tens of thousands of dead fish washed up on multiple beaches in southeast Texas over the weekend. The massive swarm died in an event known as a “fish kill” and washed ashore from the Gulf of Mexico. Menhaden fish are filter feeders that clean water of impurities while serving as a nutrient packed meal for more than 32 different predators. Texas parks and wildlife department officials say it’s a common phenomenon as temperatures rise in the summer. As water becomes warmer, less oxygen can be dissolved making it hard for fish and other aquatic organisms to breathe and survive.
