In opening remarks Wednesday, Sen. Chuck Grassley, R-Iowa, questioned the transparency of sentencing data and public records tied to Judge Ketanji Brown Jackson’s time in a district court.
While the senator praised the “grace and dignity” of the Democrat-led confirmation proceedings for President Joe Biden’s nominee for the Supreme Court, he also criticized Jackson’s sentencing record and recommendations, some of which Grassley said had been leaked to journalists and Democratic staff “in dribs and drabs.”
Grassley suggested the process “is neither thorough nor fair to the American public,” adding that it wasn’t fair to tell people to ask for information.
“You can’t ask for information you don’t know if it exists,” he said.
Grassley delivered his opening remarks on Day 3 of the Senate Judiciary Committee’s Supreme Court confirmation hearings for Jackson in Washington, D.C. It was the senators’ final day to question Jackson. If confirmed, Jackson will be the first Black woman on the high court. On the final day of the hearings March 24, the Senate Judiciary Committee will hear from friends and colleagues of Jackson about her temperament and approach to the law.
