WATCH: Satellite images show earthquake damage in Japan

Rescuers in western Japan rushed to find people buried beneath collapsed buildings after a powerful New Years Day earthquake left dozens dead and more than 300 injured.

As the clock ticked and a bitterly cold weather system moved into the region, aftershocks continued to rattle portions of the country. The government said it was struggling to bring supplies to some areas hard hit with devastation, including in the Ishikawa prefecture, the epicenter of Monday’s 7.6-magnitude quake.

Many of the fatalities occurred in the cities of Wajima and Suzu, where thousands of homes were damaged or destroyed and some remained without water and power. More than 33,000 people on Wednesday continued to shelter at evacuation centers.
