WATCH: Jan. 6 committee shows video of Sen. Hawley fleeing Jan. 6 rioters

During the eighth Jan. 6 hearing, the committee showed surveillance video of Republican Sen. Josh Hawley of Missouri fleeing Capitol rioters.

In one of the day’s most recognizable images, the senator was also captured in a photograph raising his fist in a display of solidarity with former President Donald Trump’s supporters. The moment “riled up the crowd,” Rep. Elaine Luria, D-Va., said on July 21 as the House committee investigating the Jan. 6 attack presented its findings to the public.

Luria said this observation was based on testimony from a U.S. Capitol Police officer who told the committee about Hawley’s actions on the eastern side of the building.

“She told us that Sen. Josh Hawley’s gesture riled up the crowd and it bothered her greatly because he was doing it in a safe space protected by the officers and the barriers,” Luria said.

“Later that day, Sen. Hawley fled after those protesters he helped to rile up stormed the Capitol,” Luria added.

The hearing focused on what President Donald Trump was doing during the Jan. 6, 2021 attack on the Capitol in an effort to interrupt the certification of Joe Biden’s presidential victory.

In the year since its creation, the committee has conducted more than 1,000 interviews, seeking critical information and documents from people witness to, or involved in, the violence that day.
