Total solar eclipse captivates North America

A total solar eclipse that plunged a big part of North America into darkness Monday captivated millions of Americans who either live or traveled within the path of totality.

In Oklahoma, adults and kids looked on in wonder. In Carbondale, Illinois, crowds cheered in excitement as totality — the period of time when the moon’s shadow completely covers the sun — hit. And in Cleveland, the darkness revealed some planets in the sky.
