Leading light of Canadian broadcasting, telecommunications and non-profit sector joins WPBS Board

The Board of Trustees of WPBS-TV – the PBS station serving Northern New York and Eastern Ontario – is pleased and excited to welcome Janet Yale as the newest member of the Board.

Ms. Yale is an exceptionally accomplished senior executive with a distinguished career in C-suite positions in the private, public and not-for-profit world. Most recently she chaired the Broadcasting and Telecommunications Legislative Review Panel which was tasked with reviewing federal legislation dealing with broadcasting and telecommunications, along with the CBC and the Canadian Radio-television and Telecommunications Commission (CRTC). The panel gathered submissions from more than 2,000 stakeholders, public and private broadcasters, and tech giants such as Netflix and Facebook, and completed and submitted its report, entitled Canada’s Communication Future: Time to Act, to the Minister of Canadian Heritage in January 2020.

Previously, Janet served as President and Chief Executive of the Arthritis Society (Canada), Executive Vice President at TELUS, and President and CEO of the Canadian Cable Television Association. A lawyer and economist by training, Janet worked early in her career as a director general at the CRTC and as general counsel to the Consumers Association of Canada.

Janet’s true passion is in the not-for-profit sector where she has been recognized as a prominent innovator and leader. She is past chair of the Arthritis Alliance of Canada and the Ontario Trillium Foundation and serves on the boards of Samara, Salus and Business for the Arts.

Janet is a recipient of the Queen Elizabeth II Diamond Jubilee Medal, a winner of the Woman Leader of the Year by the Federated Press and Businesswoman of the Year by the Women’s Business Network.

Stephen Todd, Chair of the WPBS-TV Board, stated, “Janet’s extensive leadership experience in the media and nonprofit sectors is unsurpassed and we are delighted to welcome her to the WPBS Board. We feel extraordinarily fortunate to be welcoming a new member of Janet’s stature and I know that our organization will benefit enormously from her wisdom and experience. We look forward to working with Janet to continue to build on WPBS’s commitment to viewers and members in the National Capital Region and across Southeastern Ontario.”

The WPBS Board has also recently confirmed its executive for the 2020-2021 fiscal year, which is as follows:

Chair – Stephen Todd

Vice Chair – Carl McLaughlin

Treasurer – Tom Piche

Secretary – Sister Ellen Rose Coughlin, SSJ
