Judge Ketanji Brown Jackson introduced herself and senators made opening statements as the Senate Judiciary Committee opened hearings for her nomination for the Supreme Court. Many senators noted Jackson’s historic status as the first Black woman to receive a nomination, while several Republican members said they hoped to avoid the contentious debates that marked nomination hearings for Justices Amy Coney Barrett and Brett Kavanaugh.
