Harris calls for an immediate six-week cease-fire in Gaza

Vice President Kamala Harris on Sunday called for an “immediate” six-week cease-fire in Gaza during an event marking the anniversary of Bloody Sunday in Selma, Alabama.

“This will get the hostages out and get a significant amount of aid in,” Harris said. “This would allow us to build something more enduring to ensure Israel is secure and to respect the right of the Palestinian people to dignity, freedom and self-determination.”

Her remarks come one day before Israeli war cabinet member Benny Gantz is scheduled to meet with Harris and national security adviser Jake Sullivan in Washington, D.C.

Israel and Hamas have been in talks brokered in Egypt to negotiate a cease-fire and hostage release deal before the Muslim holy month of Ramadan, which begins the evening of March 10.

More than 30,000 Palestinians have died since the start of the Israel-Hamas war, according to the health ministry in Gaza.
