Black River Drive-in

WPBS-DT is proud to announce our partnership with Black River Drive-In. Watch our SHORT FLIX videos right on the big screen! The generous folks at the Drive-In are showcasing a different WPBS short production each week throughout the summer season. If you like movies or are just nostalgic about memories spent at a Drive-In theatre, then the Black River Drive-In is definitely your destination.

Located in Black River, NY just outside of Watertown, near Fort Drum. The Black River Drive-In opened in August of 1950. The theatre operated into the mid 1980’s until nationwide declining attendance lead to it’s closure. After closing in the fall, a fire badly damaged the concession building.

The Theatre remained closed for the next 20 years.

In August of 2005, John Nagelschmidt, and Loren Knapp, who was the long time projectionist at the Midway Drive In, together formed Black River Drive-In, Inc. John and Loren worked diligently from that point on seeking various Board approvals and rebuilding the Theatre practically from the ground up. On August 18, 2006 the Black River Drive-in Theatre reopened it’s doors to the public.
