101 Maple Syrup: A Taste of Our Home

Pure maple syrup is often a tradition passed down from generation to generation. Jeffersonï¾’s Table looks at the old-fashioned horse and buggy way of harvesting sap and producing maple syrup with a visit to a maple sugar bush in Croghan, New York. From there, we visit the American Maple Museum, one of the few museums in the U.S. dedicated to maple syrup. In the kitchen, Pope and guest chef Lori Borden prepare maple-glazed pork.

102 A Gilded Age Picnic

At the turn of the 20th century, many millionaires flocked to the 1000 Islands for recreation and relief from the summer heat of New York City. We pay homage to them and their lifestyle with a boat tour of モMillionaireメs Rowヤ and a picnic complete with caviar and champagne at the ultimate millionaireメs mansion, Boldt Castle. Also, a visit to the Antique Boat Museum in Clayton shows how these gilded-age rich moved about the islands. From the kitchen: Mike Simpson of the Clipper in prepares poached salmon with hollandaise sauce, and a visit to Glenora Winery shows the proper way to open a bottle of champagne.

103 Haunted Halloween

In this spooky episode, Pope Vickers gets an earful of ghost stories at Fort Henry in Kingston, and Deborah McGloine checks out Rosemount Inn, part of Kingstonï¾’s Ghost Walk. In the kitchen, Chana Faye prepares pear tarts with apricot sauce, and Tony Louise discusses dessert wines.

104 Beer and Bullets

Think the War of 1812 is over? According to two microbreweries on each side of the border, itï¾’s only half-time! Instead of bullets, the war between the U.S. and Canada is now being fought with beer. We visit the Sackets Harbor Brewing Company in Sackets Harbor, New York, and the Kingston Brewing Company in Kingston, Ontario, to get their views on the art of beer-making. Along the way, tall ships make an appearance in Kingston, the War of 1812 is reinacted in Sackets Harbor, and we visit one of Canadaï¾’s oldest forts, Fort Henry.

Local hotels and restaurants take advantage of the abundance of fresh produce in their dishes and offer locally-produced wines at their tables. Greg Gardner discusses what to look for at different wineries and how to conduct your own wine-tasting party at home. Pope Vickers shows what cheeses compliment which wines. Later, they visit the Grape Harvest Festival in Niagara-on-the-Lake for an extensive wine-tasting affair.
