WATCH: Sen. Blumenthal’s opening statement in Jackson Supreme Court confirmation hearings

Sen. Richard Blumenthal, D-Conn., gave opening remarks March 21 as the Senate Judiciary Committee kicked off its Supreme Court confirmation hearings for Judge Ketanji Brown Jackson. He addressed Republican allegations that “dark money” groups are funding Jackson’s nomination.

“I’m likely to be followed by one or more colleagues who have raised allegations about your record that are simply unfounded in fact and indeed, simply irresponsible. They’re unproven and unprovable. They’re simply false,” Blumenthal said.

“One of the first lessons that you learn as a prosecutor is never to promise a jury evidence that you don’t have. There is simply no evidence to support these unfounded attacks,” he added.

Jackson was nominated by President Joe Biden in February to replace retiring Supreme Court Justice Stephen Breyer. If confirmed, she will be the first Black woman on the high court.
