Sen. Amy Klobuchar, D-Minn., questioned FBI director Chris Wray on Sept. 15 as part of a Senate Judiciary Committee hearing into the FBI’s handling of allegations against Larry Nassar. The former USA Gymnastics doctor was convicted in 2018 of sexually abusing young female athletes in his care. Klobuchar asked Wray what his personal reaction was to the investigation. Wray, who was not the head of the agency at the time of the investigation and Nassar’s arrest, said he felt “heartsick” and “furious.” When asked what the most important step the FBI is taking to ensure this never happens again, Wray said there “can’t be a single point of failure” from when abuse claims are first filed with local law enforcement to when the claims reach the bureau.
