WATCH: ‘I didn’t want to give anyone an excuse to not hire me’

In early 2020, Patty Liu started her dream job in Seattle. But when the pandemic hit, she and her husband were forced to constantly juggle working remotely with nonstop parenting of their two children. Liu was laid off, and she told the PBS NewsHour that she suspects her caregiving duties influenced her former employer’s decision to let her go. Liu said that in recent job interviews, she didn’t discuss her family with prospective employers. “I didn’t want to give anyone an excuse to not hire me, which is really sad,” she said.
