WATCH: Biden promises to nominate a Black woman for Supreme Court | June 30, 2020

News of Justice Stephen Breyer’s plan to retire has renewed focus on President Joe Biden’s repeated promise to appoint the first Black woman justice to the U.S. Supreme Court.

On June 30, 2020, a reporter asked then-presidential candidate Biden about his pledge to pick a Black woman nominee, should a spot open up.

“We are putting together a list of a group of African American women who are qualified and have the experience to be in the court,” Biden said at the time. “I am not going to release that until we go further down the line of vetting them as well.”
