Gentoo penguins are awkward on land but “pure grace underwater,” achieving speeds up to 22 mph (the fastest swimming penguins.) They can remain underwater for up to 7 minutes and dive hundreds of feet deep. They live in colonies in ice-free areas of land, but can go up to 16 miles offshore for food.
