Singer Castle, Chippewa Bay, New York

Frederick Bourne of Singer Sewing Machines told his family he was going to build a hunting lodge in the 1000 Islands. Imagine their surprise when they set eyes on this beautiful castle they called “The Towers.” Today, it is known as Singer Castle on Dark Island, and is open to the public for tours. Visitors can also stay overnight in Singer Castle in the Royal Suite, and be “King and Queen of Singer Castle.”

Dark Island is a seven-acre island. Several buildings have been constructed on the island, including the castle, the south boathouse, the north boathouse, the clock tower, and a sports building,

The castle cost $500,000 to erect in 1905, and included secret passageways and a European-style reception hall complete with enormous fireplaces and standing suits of armor. The secret passageways were designed into the castle to mirror what was in the book “Woodstock” by Sir Walter Scott. The castle contains original furnishings from all three owners.
