First statue of Black American now in Statuary Hall collection #shorts

A statue honoring Mary McLeod Bethune was unveiled in the U.S. Capitol on Wednesday. Bethune is the first Black American to represent a state in Statuary Hall.

Bethune was a landmark civil rights and women’s rights leader and educator in 20th century America. Her statue is one of two representing Florida and replaces a statue of a Confederate general that was removed from Statuary Hall in 2021.
