The first Fort Niagara Light was established on the roof of the fort or “Castle” as it was known, in 1781 or 1782.
That light was the earliest “unofficial” light on the Great Lakes.
The light was removed circa 1805.
Another light atop the Castle was built in 1823
The existing stone light went into service in 1872. The light is no longer active.
Old Fort Niagara, within Fort Niagara State Park, is a National Historic Landmark
Fort is open year round
The lighthouse and gift shop are open during the summer.
