The now 102-year-old Romay Davis served in a segregated, all-Black female postal unit in WWII and was honored with a Congressional Gold Medal citation this week.

Davis was one of more than 800 Black women in her unit in the Women’s Army Corps. The honor was awarded to the entire 6888th Central Postal Directory Battalion.

Her unit helped clear a six-month backlog of mail and packages to U.S. troops in three months.

This post was produced and edited by Casey Kuhn, Julia Griffin, Yasmeen Alamiri, and Dan Cooney.
