PBS KIDS GO! Writers Contest Winners Announced

WPBS-TV, Watertown PBS, is pleased to recognize 12 young authors for their award-winning stories submitted to the PBS KIDS GO! Writers Contest. They were chosen from over 100 local entrants and judged by a group of local retired librarians, teachers and a children’s book author.

The PBS KIDS GO! Writers Contest is a local contest designed to promote the advancement of children’s reading skills through hands-on, active learning. The contest encourages children throughout Northern New York and Eastern Ontario, in grades K-3, to celebrate the power of creating original stories and illustrations.

Kindergarten:
First Place: Ruben O’Meara, Carthage: The Little Chick

Second Place: Sophie Anderson, Ottawa, Ontario: The Princess Fairy Kiwi’s Ball

Third Place: Gabriella Wines, Watertown: Mr. Hill and I

First Grade:
First Place: Jori Tate, Copenhagen: Tiger and Rabbit Play Together

Second Place: Ariana Hall, Watertown: The Day a Bird Took My Tooth Out

Third Place: Jessica Yesensky, Pulaski: New Friends

Second Grade:
First Place: Aiyanna-Marie Gordon, Watertown: The Elephant Who Love To Jump Rope

Second Place: Olivia Elizondo, Watertown: The Flamingo Who Took Ballet Lessons

Third Place: Nadia Cheng, Potsdam: A Whale in Space

Third Grade:
First Place: Gillianna Simcox, Norwood: Flight and Leap

Second Place: Kayla Smith, Harrisville: Colorful Cupcakes

Third Place: Richard Plumpton, Hammond: The Adventure of Raptor

The winners were recognized in a ceremony at the station where each child read their story to an audience filled with family and friends. The ceremony was taped and will air in between children’s programming on WPBS-TV this summer. The winning stories will also be posted at wpbstv.org.

“There is a connection between writing and the development of early literacy skills that are cornerstones for school readiness and achievement.” said Lynn Brown, Executive Vice President for WPBS-TV. “Congratulations to all of the children and their teachers from so many local schools who entered the Contest at WPBS-TV.”
