President/General Manager

The Organization
St. Lawrence Valley Educational Television Council, Inc. (WPBS) is a long-standing, reliable source of educational programming and community engagement in the northern New York and eastern Canada region.

Celebrating its sixty-year anniversary in 2018, WPBS is the trusted source for life-long education, entertainment, and information to the two-nation region.  The station is serving approximately 650,000 households with quality media content, partnerships and service that inspires those WPBS serves.  70% of WPBS members are residents of eastern Canada with Ottawa and Kingston at the center of the Canadian community served.

WPBS station and staff select highlights and achievements:

WPBS has substantially increased productions in the traditional sense of public media, created a digital media platform and populated it with digital content, and increased the amount of content created through Quality Production sales. 

To date, WPBS produces 13, 30-minute episodes of Fishing Behind the Lines; 13, 30-minute episodes of Painting with Wilson Bickford, syndicated nationally on Create TV; 6, 30-minutes public affairs episodes of More to the Story, a collaboration with the Watertown Daily Times.  In addition, a variety of limited series and specials has been produced such as the upcoming New York's Seaway Lighthouses, Park-It! Discovering Jefferson County; Folklore & Frost; Xpedition Outdoors, Countryside and a trilogy on the Raquette River and many more.

WPBS created GPS for Success.  It is developed by WPBS, presented by the Northern New York Community Foundation and in partnership with the Jefferson/Lewis BOCES.  This is a career mapping resource to assist students in planning for their high school courses and beyond. 

Through a series of strategic objectives, the overall operating budget increased from .2-Million in 2013 to .8-Million in 2018.  There is an emphasis on increasing revenues in Community Support, Quality Production, Tower Rentals, Increased Productions and Planned Giving.  WPBS has transformed the corporate culture through staff restructuring, implementing a series of professional development trainings, encouraging every employee to have a voice at the table and nurturing an environment where creativity and out-of-the-box ideas are celebrated.  There are 24 employees, 21 full time and 3 part time.

 

The Position
The Board of Directors is seeking a President/General Manager who is a mission-focused, business-minded leader with a passion for public media and with the capacity for community engagement.  It is critical that the President/General Manager is an idea generator who captures opportunities and explores new ways to expand the WPBS brand and product offerings to serve a broader target audience and strengthen WPBS's competitive position.  The ideal candidate will bring a community building sensitivity and entrepreneurial spirit to WPBS.

The President/General Manager will oversee all operations and lead an organization of professionals in broadcast and digital content operations, programming, engineering, fundraising, corporate underwriting, membership, marketing and communications, board relations, business management and Quality Productions, Inc.  This is a high visibility position in the community with regular interface with board members, key external business partners, and members of the greater North Country regional arts, education, and public affairs communities.

 

Key Selection Criteria
An ideally qualified candidate will have:

  • A passion for the core values of WPBS and its vision and cultural mission. 
  • Experience in managing an organization in public media or a similarly values-driven organization.
  • Experience in dealing with a volunteer, non-profit board and in building board capacity.
  • Experience in revenue management and content management.
  • Proven success in raising funds and managing fundraising campaigns.
  • Leadership ability to inspire top performance from staff.
  • The ability to work collaboratively as part of an experienced management team and a capacity to support the professional development of all staff.
  • The skills to effectively sell ideas to partners, employees and the community.
  • Strong communication skills and a transparent leadership style.
  • Comfort with being the community "face" of WPBS and a desire to seek out engagement with donors, underwriters and community leaders.
  • Experience in effectively achieving results with limited resources.
  • Change management skills.
  • A high level of business acumen.
  • Bachelor's degree or equivalent experience required; advanced degree desirable.
